Dr. Abel Mesquita graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto in 1989, and has been a Specialist in Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery since 1998, registered with the Portuguese Medical Association (Ordem dos Médicos) and its College of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery. In the academic field, he is an Invited Associate Professor of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery at the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS) and Regent Professor of the Elective Course Unit in Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery at ICBAS.
In his hospital career, he is a Senior Hospital Assistant in Plastic Surgery, founded the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department at the Local Health Unit of Santo António (ULSSA), serving as its Director from 2013 to the present, and also serves as the Outpatient Clinic Manager for Plastic Surgery at ULSSA. Previously, he was the Director of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department at the Maria Pia Specialized Central Children’s Hospital (1998-2008) and Head of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Unit at CHUP (2008-2013). Institutionally, he was a Board Member of the College of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery between 2009 and 2017. In the private sector, he is the Clinical Director and Founder of Clínica Model – Porto (from 2002 to the present), having also served as Clinical Director of Clínica Renaissance – Porto (1998-2002).
His international specialization began in 1997 when he completed training in Craniofacial Surgery and Rhinoplasty under Prof. Dr. Fernando Ortiz Monastério and Prof. Dr. Fernando Molina at the Hospital Manuel Gea Gonzalez in Mexico City. Between 1998 and 2001, he attended several international courses and training programs in LASER and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and their clinical applications in the treatment of Congenital Malformations and Aesthetic Surgery, under Dr. Ramón Villa Rovira at the Institut Vila-Rovira of Reconstructive and Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and Centro Médico Teknon in Barcelona, under Dr. Mario Trelles at the Instituto Médico Vilafortuny in Tarragona, and under Dr. Javier Moreno Moraga at the Instituto Médico Laser in Madrid. He also completed training in Facial Rejuvenation with Chemical Peels under Dr. Philippe Deprez in Empuriabrava (2007). More recently, he completed training in Vascular and Nerve Microsurgery at the Jesús Usón Minimally Invasive Surgery Centre in Cáceres (2014 and 2015), and in Microsurgery for Facial Paralysis under Dr. Alexandre Cardenas at the Hospital Manuel Gea Gonzalez (2024).
